Apply to The Cooper Union STEM Outreach Program
    The STEM Program challenges New York City high school students to invent "tech for good."  Students work in teams while they develop engineering, entrepreneurship, project management, design, and presentation skills.
    Summer STEM
    Students currently in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade may apply. Students must apply to classes in the grade they are currently in.

    The Summer STEM 2024 classes are:
    1. Intro to Engineering - 9th graders, 3 weeks, in person
    2. Sustainable Futures - 10th and 11th graders, 6 weeks, in person
    3. Digital Electronics for the Inventor - 10th and 11th graders, 6 weeks, in person
    4. Design and Drawing for Engineering - 10th and 11th graders, 6 weeks, in person
    5. Linear Algebra for Engineering Research - 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, 3 weeks, online
    • Application Opens: Monday, February 5, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. EST
    • Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EST
    • Letters of Recommendation Deadline: Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. EST
    • Class Dates:
      • 9th Grade: Session 1 July 8 - July 25, 2024 / Session 2: July 29 - August 15, 2024
      • 10th and 11th Grade: July 8 - August 15, 2024
      • 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade Online Class: July 8 - July 25, 2024
    • Class Times: 
      • In Person - 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
      • Synchronous Online - 1:00 - 3:30 pm EST. Study groups meet 11:30 am - 12:30 pm or 4:00 – 5:00 pm EST.  
    • Location: The Cooper Union campus at 41 Cooper Square, New York

    You may qualify to become a Cooper Next Scholar and earn a stipend:
    1. You may apply to be a Cooper Next Scholar if:
      • You are a current 10th or 11th grade student living in and attending a New York City school.
      • Apply for a six-week class.
      • Participate in communication and career workshops on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 pm during Summer STEM.
      • Are a low- and moderate-income student applying for financial aid.
      • Fill out the additional essay question: How will a Cooper Next Scholars internship benefit your school and/or career pathway? (100-150 words)
      • Submit your application by March 8, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
    To complete the application, you will need:
    1. Your transcript. Unofficial transcripts are accepted.
    2. Write an essay and a short answer.
      1. Essay: Students at The Cooper Union work to address the critical challenges of our time. What is a current problem that you think could be solved through engineering? Why are you inspired to address this problem? (300-500 words)
      2. Short answer may be written (200 words or less) OR you may create a video (2 minutes or less): Please tell us about something you do or did outside of school that makes you proud and why it makes you feel that way.
    3. Request a recommendation letter. It should be from a teacher or supervisor that can address your leadership, teamwork, and motivation. Recommendation Letters are due with the application on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. 9th grade students may request a recommendation from a middle school instructor or guidance counselor.
    4. Select a class.
    5. Students must complete the application.  Parents are not permitted to complete the application.
